Drop Everything and Read

Multicultural Division celebrated a fabulous Library Week with many activities geared towards reading, learning about authors and illustrators, writing book reports, and of course learning more about the library.  The students enjoyed the “Special Guest Reader” events as many parents and other dignitaries shared their favorite stories with the classes.  Dr. Magee read Madeline and Ms Heagle read Skippy John Jones and the Principal “told” a story to grade 2 of her very naughty day when she was five years old.

In the Library the students enjoyed a lively Scavenger Hunt looking for assigned items on the search list from Mr. Leite. Soooo many secrets were discovered about our wonderful library. It’s an amazing place.

During the week the students were challenged to read 1,500 books in one week.  Wow…they passed that goal and in just four days with the students in grades 1-5 reading 2032 books!!  All classrooms received a great new book for their classroom library to honor this achievement.

The students also designed bookmarks which were shared with their classmates. During the week the students decided to collect gently used books to share with a school in need of library books.  We thank all the students, parents and teachers who gave a special book to this volunteer project.

The closing of Library week was a celebration of Dr. Seuss’ favorite food…strawberries.  The teachers arranged an eating contest to honor Dr. Seuss…eating plates of strawberries with no chopsticks, fingers or forks.  Finally, they enjoyed a relaxing afternoon in their pajamas with a teddy bear, popcorn and their favorite book.

Thank you students for being such exciting, wonderful, involved and happy readers.  See you next year at Library week!  In the meantime, keep our Library and librarians busy with your  deep interest in reading.
