Nearly 150 students from seven international schools in Shanghai gathered at SCLS recently to celebrate books and reading. SCLS is a member of Battle of the Books, a school club and annual event held in international schools around the world. Each year, students in the club read twelve assigned books and get ready to compete against other students. Activities included designing new book covers for the assigned books; role-playing characters and quizzing other students until you have gathered all of the characters from your book (and go for a group photo!); and a very lively game of Kahout, an online multiple-choice platform. The variety of games organized gave students lots of ways to show their understanding of the books they read this year.
A highlight of the day was the presentation by American author and illustrator, George O’Connor. Mr. O’Connor is most well-known for his Olympians series and kindly shared some of his time in Shanghai with us. He described how he comes to create his characters, both through words and through his illustrations. Mr. O’Connor drew a comical self-portrait, explaining his artistic intentions at every point. It was instructive for students to see how thoughtful writers are and how many factors can be part of a literary decision.
The last activity of the day was cake-decorating. SCLS’s kitchen baked nearly thirty cakes, one for each team. Students brought cake decorating materials (icing, candies, cookies, small figures, food dye, and so on), and in 20 minutes produced beautifully imagined cakes, with a clear first prize winner.
SCLS Middle School was delighted to host this event and to show off our lovely campus. Under the leadership of our Head Librarian, students and teachers had a wonderful day talking about books and enjoying each other’s company.
