Qingming, Gratitude and Remembrance
Posted 04/08/2018 11:00AM

Qingming is not only a traditional festival but also a special day for SCLS students to show respect and gratitude to Madam Soong Ching Ling and other Martyrs.

Last week, teachers and students at SCLS conducted a solemn tomb sweeping ceremony either at Soong Ching Ling’s mausoleum, at Shanghai Qingpu Dongxiang Revolutionary Martyrs Cemetery or within the school in front of the statue of Madam Soong. During the ceremony, students bowed and presented their self-made yellow flowers to express their love and respect.

The tomb sweeping ceremony is part of the root-searching lessons in the spring curriculum of the Domestic Division.“The history of the Chinese nation goes back to ancient times. As the descendants of the Chinese people, we should understand the importance of our cultural origins. The process of Qingming tomb sweeping ceremony is a root-searching process for the cultural origins of Chinese nations. I hope our students can understand why Madam Soong is the root of SCLS through the ceremony”, said Zhaosu, counsellor from Primary School Domestic Division.

Many unknown soldiers who sacrificed their lives for the independence and liberation of the Chinese nation now sleep their long sleep in Shanghai Qingpu Dongxiang Revolutionary Martyrs Cemetery. Through the Qingming tomb sweeping ceremony, we show our respect to the history of the past, gratitude for the happy life we have today and good wishes for peace in the future.

Around Qingming festival, students learnt how Madam Soong Ching Ling grew up and what huge contributions she made to women and children. They also learnt about her unparalleled personality and noble character.

Dr. Magee, the Principal from the International Division Middle School, said: “Soong Ching Ling is a model of kindness, loyalty and the values of international-mindedness. We don’t know yet what you will do when you grow up, but we hope that you are a force for good, like Soong Ching Ling was.  She brought people together, both in China and internationally and was one of the great women of history.”

SCLS is named after Madam Soong Ching Ling. It’s pride but also responsibility which reminds us of the social commitment and historical mission we each carry as a student or teacher in Soong Ching Ling School. We blend Madam Soong’s thoughts and spirit with our actual deeds.
