Student Activities

Students activities are a rich and rewarding part of a student's day. Through such events they are able to be engaged in non-academic activities as well as be exposed to learning of another kind. Each student is encouraged to find an activity which will bring them new knowledge, enjoyment and fill their heart and mind with other views on life. A sampling of these activities include:

Friday Assembly

All students are required to attend this ceremony each Monday morning in the major athletic filed of the school.  Joined by the Domestic Division, the Flag Ceremony is an important way to start the week with song, skit, honors be given out and words of praise as well as the honorable ceremony of raising the flag of China.

Book Fair

Each Spring we host the annual Book Fair which is a two day event. Students are carefully guided in select books wisely during the first day of "window shopping." Students may go with his/her class as well as after school when the Book Fair is open to parents.

Scripts Spelling Bee

Students in grades 3-8 are given the opportunity to participate in the Spring Spelling Bee.  From the school level we send students to the regional level in Shanghai or Beijing.  The school and students fully support this annual event and create a real team spirit about spelling and word definitions.  The teachers of the younger students hold a "bumble bee" spelling contest within each grade level.

Library Week

We follow the USA calendar for the National Library Week events.  Library Week is full of a host of activities including teachers telling stories in other classes, dress as your favorite storybook character for a day, making beautiful book covers, bookmarks and advertisements for a storybook.  Author's style of writing are studied as well as favorite illustrators.  The main library is decorated with animals reading books, skits are performed and book treasure hunts are held throughout the week in the library.

Storyteller Week

A week is set aside for visiting storytellers to  engage and entertain the students in listening to stories and appreciating storytellers who are able to tell stories with no props.  Often the storytellers stay for lunch or offer after school workshops for teachers.  This year  the storyteller was from New York city and previous year from North Carolina.

Sports Day

The entire school looks forward to Sport Week.  Classrooms adopt a team name, symbol and motto. Following opening ceremony the fields are full of well organized games and activities involving students, teachers and parents.   Classes receive awards  such as Sportsmanship, Team Spirit, Caring for Others followed by special treats and cheers.

Campus Garden Care

Through the efforts of the wonderful school ayis our gardens and mini forests are a beautiful and educational part of our campus life.  We are currently designing and will be planting a Soong Ching Ling School Global Peace Garden.

Flag Ceremony

All students are required to attend this ceremony each Monday morning in the major athletic filed of the school.  Joined by the Domestic Division, the Flag Ceremony is an important way to start the week with song, skit, honors be given out and words of praise as well as the honorable ceremony of raising the flag of China.
